Settler wounds soldier defending local olive pickers
By Yuval Azoulay

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was lightly wounded in clashes with settlers near the West Bank settlement of Otniel yesterday, while three border policemen were lightly wounded in clashes with Israeli leftists and Palestinians near the West Bank town of Na'alin.

The first incident occurred when a Palestinian family came to harvest olives from a grove near Otniel. The date and time had been coordinated with the IDF in advance, so soldiers were stationed nearby to guard the harvesters.

According to army sources, a group of masked youths then approached from the direction of Otniel and began throwing stones at the harvesters. When the soldiers tried to drive them off, clashes erupted, and one of the soldiers was hit in the head with a club. He was taken to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva for treatment.

One of the settlers also tried to seize a soldier's gun, but was subdued by the other soldiers.

In the second incident yesterday afternoon, three border policemen were lightly injured when Palestinians and Israeli leftists demonstrating against the separation fence threw stones at them. The IDF eventually dispersed the demonstration.

Yuval Goren adds:

On Tuesday night, 29 settlers, including 21 minors, were arrested after holding an unlicensed demonstration near the home of GOC Central Command Gadi Shamni. They were protesting what they termed Shamni's unfair treatment of settlers.

Yesterday, all 29 were brought to court and released on bail. But several promptly went back to Shamni's house and began demonstrating again, after which 19 were rearrested. They were released on bail a second time on condition that they stay away from Shamni's house.
