VIDEO / Crash involving reliable Zukit plane takes Air Force aback
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Israel News, Fouga Magister

An accident involving a Zukit training plane is considered extremely rare, which is why the crash that killed two Israel Air Force pilots on Wednesday took the military establishment by surprise.

The French Fouga Magister plane has been in use by the IAF for almost 50 years. Twenty-five years ago, it was adapted and upgraded into the Zukit plane, through which new pilots learn the basics of flying. The last crash involving a Zukit took place almost 30 years ago.

he Zukit is a two-seater dual engine aircraft with two steering stations, giving both the student in front and the instructor in back control of the plane.

The IAF will soon part from the Zukit in favor of a different training plane - the Texan, which is considered more modern. But air force officials insist the decision to replace the reliable Zukit has absolutely nothing to do with its safety.
