VIDEO / Republican accuses Al-Jazeera of distorting racist comments by Palin backers

A Republican Party official in Ohio is claiming that the English-language channel of the Al-Jazeera news network has taken racist comments from local people who attended a Sarah Palin rally out of context.

In the clip in question, a reporter talks to people at a campaign rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

The video, which was also posted on YouTube, features one woman who says she's afraid if Democrat Barack Obama, who is black, is elected president, "the black will take over."





Another person is concerned Obama could be "anti-white" and a third says "Obama thinks white people are trash."

Belmont County Republican Chairman Kent Moore, speaking to local television station WTOV-TV, says the remarks are out of context, and it's not clear what questions were asked.

A message for comment was left with Al-Jazeera on Monday.

Al-Jazeera, which is based in Doha, Qatar, broadcasts in Arabic and launched an English-language channel in 2006.

The news channel has been criticized by the Bush administration for its perceived anti-American bias while at the same time the station has been banned from a number of Arabic-speaking countries due to its often critical coverage of area governments.

The video has received 1.4 million views on YouTube.
