Saudi paper: Israel okayed Hamas list for Shalit
By Jack Khoury and Amos Harel

The Saudi newspaper Okaz reported yesterday that top Israeli negotiator Amos Gilad has informed Egyptian officials that Israel is prepared to release the 450 prisoners Hamas has demanded in exchange for Israel Defense Forces Corporal Gilad Shalit, who has been held captive in the Gaza Strip for more than two years. Gilad has denied the report.

Okaz said that after a new coalition is formed in Israel, the new government will convene in order to authorize the exchange, which will immediately be followed by the release of 550 more prisoners.

Gilad, who was interviewed by the Saudi daily following a similar report on Israel Radio, yesterday rejected the idea that the prisoner list was close to being authorized.

At the beginning of the month, Israeli security officials warned that the time to complete an exchange is running out, and that as time passes, the chances of bringing Shalit home safely are also diminishing.

The officials added that they believe that given time, Hamas is likely to raise its asking price. "We must take many options into account, not all of which are under our control. The cease-fire on the Gaza border could collapse, and Egypt could reduce its involvement in the talks," they said, adding that one of Shalit's guards could also potentially harm him.

Yesterday, security officials denied the Saudi report, saying that Israeli officials still had major differences of opinion regarding the prisoner list, and that disagreement remained over several hundred prisoners.
