Austrian rightist Haider was drunk during fatal car crash, says successor

Austrian far-right politician Joerg Haider had been drinking when he died in a high-speed crash of his car last weekend, a party official said on
Wednesday.

"It is correct that ... Joerg Haider was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. I can and must confirm that," said Stefan Petzner, the new head of Haider's Alliance for Austria's Future party.

Haider, 58, was killed in the early hours of Saturday when the car he was driving at 142 kmh, around twice the speed limit, crashed off a road in the southern province of Carinthia, where he served as governor.

His far-right rhetoric in the 1990s was denounced as sympathetic to the Nazis.

He had been making a return to national politics with a more moderate line, almost a decade after his party's inclusion in the Austrian government led to European Union sanctions.

Haider's car veered off the road in southern Austria after overtaking another vehicle, and overturned, police said. He was alone in the car.

Haider suffered severe injuries to his head and chest despite wearing a
seatbelt. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Thomas Koperna, the hospital's medical director.
