Acre group to partially reopen festival shut by clashes

The Acre Coalition, a group sprung from the violent clashes between Jews and Arabs in the northern city last week, has planned to partially revive the Acre Theater Festival that was called off in the wake of the recent unrest. The Al Laz Theater in Acre's Old City will host a number of plays, including some that had been originally scheduled for the festival.

The Arab group, which has championed "Acre is not alone" as its slogan, aims to draw in Jewish and Arab audiences to support Acre's Arab residents. The plays "Hawash" and "The Optimist" by Emil Habibi will take to the stage on Thursday evening. Movies and musical performances will be held in the Old City on Friday and Saturday.

The organizers say that the events are being held in the hopes of drawing in the very audiences that were turned away when the festival was canceled, in what they dubbed was the "collective punishment" of all the residents Acre.

The move also aims to emphasize that Acre has no intention of surrendering its position of influence as an urban center for Arab Israelis. Nevertheless, there are no plans to hold larger events, as these could provoke a renewed round of clashes in the city.

"Visiting the town of Acre and the Old City is a positive and desirable step, in light of the current economic siege on the town," the group stated.
