Tennis / Austria Trophy / Ram takes doubles title sans Erlich
By Rami Hipsh

Andy Ram yesterday won his 14th career doubles title and, for the first time since 2003, accomplished the feat without his regular partner, Yoni Erlich. While Erlich remained in Israel with an injury, Ram teamed up with Max Mirnyi of Belarus at the Austria Tennis Trophy final to defeat Austrian Alexander Peya and Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-1, 7-5 in 74 minutes.

The temporary duo had a virtual cakewalk through the first set but were trailing 5-2 in the second before finding their groove, winning the final five games in a row. The team likely took advantage of Petzschner's excitement - and exhaustion - from winning as a mere qualifier the singles title in Vienna earlier that day after surprising eighth seed Gael Monfils in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Ram, who took his third doubles title of the year, will split the winners' purse of 39,500 euros with Mirnyi, who is also a leading doubles player. Ram will compete later this week in the Madrid Masters tournament, where he plans to pair up with Michael Youzhny of Russia.
