U.S. tycoon gives David Grossman Torah scroll in son's memory
By Nadav Shragai, Haaretz Correspondent

American Jewish tycoon Ira Rennert gave author David Grossman a Torah on Sunday in memory of Grossman's son Uri, who was killed in the Second Lebanon War.

The family received the Torah at the Netiv Aryeh Yeshiva in Jerusalem's Old City, at a ceremony marking the completion of seven Torahs that Rennert donated in memory of Israel Defense Forces soldiers and terror victims. Grossman, who attended the ceremony with his wife Michal, wrote the ceremonial last letters of the Torah, which he will donate to the Reform synagogue in Mevasseret Zion that his son attended.

Sunday's ceremony was attended by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, Maj. Gen. (res.) Elazar Stern and Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz. Rabbi Maya Leibovitch of Kehillat Mevasseret Zion, the congregation that will receive Grossman's Torah, also attended.

Grossman thanked Rennert for the donation and noted that although he and Rennert - a major donor to Israel who is heavily identified with the right - come from different worlds, "there are things that go beyond differences of viewpoint and opinion."

Michal Grossman told Haaretz Sunday that the donation of the Torah came from a desire to honor those who have lost that which is most precious, regardless of their political views. "We came to the ceremony to honor those who seek to honor us," she added.
