Hospital to probe link between train crash, chronic pain
By Yuval Azoulay

Five patients injured in the Revadim train crash three years ago have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, or chronic pain syndrome. As a result, Be'er Sheva's Soroka Medical Center has decided to investigate a possible connection between the accident and chronic, severe pain.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic, widespread pain and tenderness to touch. Other symptoms can include fatigue, tingling of the skin, muscle aches, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, nerve pain, bowel disturbances and sleep disturbances. The syndrome affects two to three percent of the population, but is more prevalent among women.

The June 2005 train crash near Kibbutz Revadim, which killed eight people and injured more than 200, occurred when a passenger train from central Israel to Be'er Sheva crashed into a truck stuck on the tracks. Most of the injured were evacuated to Soroka and are still being monitored by Soroka staff.

The first fibromyalgia diagnosis of the crash was of a woman who, after recovering from her injuries, began suffering from headaches, severe back pain and pain in her extremities. Dr. Dan Buskila, an internationally recognized expert in the syndrome and member of Soroka's staff, diagnosed her, and then the other four patients. That prompted him to launch the planned study.

His research partner, Dr. Zachi Ben Zion, said that because the crash victims offer a large population injured to varying extents at the same time, they provide an opportunity to "scientifically examine the connection between the injury and the severity of the pain."
