Worsening water crisis has experts both hailing and decrying desalination

Lake Kinneret reached its lowest level in recorded history last week, and the Infrastructure Ministry has launched a familiar campaign to educate Israelis on water conservation.

The current crisis is reminiscent of the panic of 2000, when the water level of Lake Kinneret also plummeted. But several subsequent rainy winters washed away both memories of the water crisis and the prominence of water conservation from the national agenda.

veryone agrees something must be done, but nobody agrees on what. Many are calling for an increase in desalination, an expensive method that turns seawater into potable water for human consumption.
