2 Palestinians killed in tunnel blast

Two Palestinians were killed in an explosion in a smuggling tunnel under the Gaza-Egypt border, police and hospital officials said yesterday. Two others are still missing. Officials say the blast occured Friday when a gas canister blew up. Friday's deaths bring to 47 the number of Palestinians killed in tunnels this year. In the wake of growing concern over worker safety, Hamas has made tunnel operators sign a pledge to compensate the families of those killed. (AP)

Iranian boy with cancer here for care

A 12-year-old Iranian boy with a brain tumor arrived at an Israeli hospital on Friday for emergency treatment. The boy, identified only as Roy, to protect his privacy, was wheeled on a stretcher into the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, after treatment in Iran and Turkey failed. His face was puffy, apparently due to the drugs administered to ease his pain. Israel granted the child and his parents a special permit to enter the country, and they arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport on Friday. (AP)

Two dead in weekend road accidents

Two people were killed and nine injured in four traffic accidents across the country this weekend. Yesterday morning, a 75-year-old pedestrian was killed at the northern entrance to the city of Taibeh while crossing the road. Near Ramot Menashe in the Jezreel Valley, a 28-year-old officer from the center of the country was killed when his motorcycle skidded and collided head on with another motorcycle. Near Neot Mordechai in the Upper Galilee, a woman suffered serious head wounds when her vehicle flipped. (Igal Hai, Eli Ashkenazi and Yuval Azoulay)

Armed robot may patrol airport

A new robotic vehicle may be integrated into a comprehensive security system at Ben-Gurion International Airport to protect against infiltrators. Haaretz has learned that the Israel Airports Authority is considering leasing the vehicle in order to test its capabilities. The vehicle is fitted with cameras and weapons systems, and would be used in place of the manned patrols that now monitor the airport gate. A year ago, manufacturers from Israel and abroad provided demonstrations of such unmanned vehicles. (Zohar Blumenkrantz)

Petition: Ramon got salary while on trial

The High Court of Justice will hear a petition filed by the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel against the Knesset Ethics Committee, which decided not to withhold the salary of vice premier Haim Ramon for his absence from Knesset meetings during his 2006-07 sexual harassment trial. The committee responded that the court may not intervene in its decisions, since the committee's legal proceedings deal with behavioral standards Knesset members have set for themselves. Ramon was absent from the meetings between October 2006 and March 2007 while being tried for sexual harassment of a female IDF soldier. He was later convicted. (Tomer Zarchin)
