Armed robot may patrol airport

The vehicle is fitted with cameras and weapons systems, to replace the manned patrols that monitor the airport gate.

A new robotic vehicle may be integrated into a comprehensive security system at Ben-Gurion International Airport to protect against infiltrators.

Haaretz has learned that the Israel Airports Authority is considering leasing the vehicle in order to test its capabilities. The vehicle is fitted with cameras and weapons systems, and would be used in place of the manned patrols that now monitor the airport gate. A year ago, manufacturers from Israel and abroad provided demonstrations of such unmanned vehicles.

Airport security has been further tightened with the installation of a new weapons metal detection system, designed to speed up security checks and reduce travel delays.

The MagShoe system, developed by IDO Security, Inc. has been introduced at security check entry points throughout Terminal 3, Ben Gurion Airport's main terminal.

Already in use at a number of international airports, the technology is an improvement on traditional walkthrough metal detectors and operates by scanning the ankles and feet of passengers in seconds - without requiring the removal of shoes.

"Traveler safety is always our first priority-and our process for vetting new security technologies is rigorous," said Nissim Ben-Ezra, Securities Technology Manager for the Israel Airports Authority.

"IDO Security's MagShoe is at the cutting-edge of the market, and allows us to continue to provide the highest levels of security to our international passengers," Ben-Ezra continued.
