Luxembourg coach running team ragged ahead of Israel date
By Moshe Boker

Luxembourg's national soccer team last night held the first of nine training sessions scheduled ahead of its October 11 World Cup qualifier match against Israel.

Luxembourg, one of the smallest and historically weakest clubs in European soccer, won its first ever World Cup qualifying match on September 10 with a 2-1 away win against Switzerland.

Coach Guy Hellers has instituted an intensive training program for his players, who in addition to last night's practice have eight more training sessions before meeting Israel - a morning and evening practice every day until the match.

Four days after taking on Israel, the Luxembourgers will compete against Moldova.

The suspension of several of the team's strongest players, including defenders Jeff Strasser and Eric Hoffman, has forced Hellers and his assistants to improvise and call up younger prospects like 17-year-old Paul Bussey to fill the ranks.

Israel, for its part, seems to be taking the contest in stride.

It has only one practice scheduled ahead of the match, on Friday evening, the day the team arrives in the grand duchy to take on its plucky, newly self-assured opponent.

Luxembourg's management has set a press conference for that day to announce its final roster for the match., which they hope will prove their win over the Swiss was no mere fluke.
