Comptroller hears Dichter testimony over police wiretap case

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter on Sunday testified before the state comptroller over allegations that the Israel Police used illicit wiretaps while gathering evidence in the sexual assault trial of Vice Premier Haim Ramon.

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss had ordered the investigation after Ramon's defense attorneys complained police may have used wiretaps in the Prime Minister's Office in connection with the allegations Ramon forcibly kissed a female soldier.

The wiretapping suspicions are based on a document contained in the investigative material submitted to Ramon's attorneys.

The State Comptroller's Office believe that the case will be concluded in the coming weeks. The comptroller has already heard testimony on the matter from Ramon, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, Police Commissioner David Cohen, former police chief Moshe Karadi and the head of the police investigative unit, Yohanan Sanino.

A report issued last year by retired justice Shalom Brenner revealed negligence and other faults in police use of wiretaps in the Ramon case, but found no proof of malice.

Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann ordered further committee investigation into the report, but the request was halted after a majority of ministers voiced satisfaction with a comptroller probe.
