Environment Ministry: 60% of Israeli factories exceed air pollution limits
By Zafrir Rinat

Some 60 percent of factories in Israel emit levels of air pollution beyond the permissible limits, according to an investigation carried out last year by the Environment Ministry.

The ministry conducted 377 surprise checks on 50 factories as part of the investigation.

The majority of factories investigated were found to have rectified their violations and the level of pollution has dropped significantly according to checks repeated this year, said the ministry.

In some of the cases, however, the ministry was forced to carry out enforcement procedures, including legal hearings. The ministry has opened a file to investigate further violations of business license terms.

Among the factories that were examined, several were found to be emitting poisonous chemical substances.

In the Yehuda Pladot metal factory in Ashdod, the ministry discovered excessive levels of Dioxin, a highly poisonous substance, at 84 percent above the norm. The factory has been instructed to rectify the problem by the end of 2008.

But the factory with the highest rate of air pollution is the Ronopolidan packing plant in Barkan, where levels of poisonous chemical substances exceeded authorized limits by 5,000 percent.

Environment Minister Gideon Ezra said on Saturday that the enactment of the Clean Air Act that - passed in the Knesset last Tuesday - the ministry would have within its powers more stringent and dissuasive enforcement measures.
