Israeli Arabs mark anniversary of October 2000 riots
By Jack Khoury

Hundreds of people commemorated on Saturday the eighth anniversary of the October 2000 events, during which 13 Israeli Arabs were shot dead by police.

The protesters waved Palestinian and black flags and carried banners bearing the portraits of the dead.

Addressing the rally in the Israeli Arab city of Sakhnin, Higher Arab Monitoring Committee Chairman Shawki Khatib said that the group plans to submit to the president and the prime minister a petition, signed by some 250,000 people, to establish an independent inquiry committee, comprising international experts.

"We have no confidence in the Attorney General or the judicial system, which is affiliated to the establishment that perceives us a demographic threat," Khatib said. "This is why we decided to appeal to the international community. We have already started working toward bringing to justice the killers of our sons."

He said the relatives of the victims and the Arab community will not let this issue die down, "even if the judiciary and the Israeli establishment want that to happen."

Over the past few months, Arab leaders and families of the victims have visited South Africa in order to draw lessons from similar events the country witnessed in the past.

Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights, for its part, has already started preparing portfolios on top Israel Police officers which will be sent in turn to European organizations.

Adalah Chairman Hassan Jabareen said that Spanish courts will be the first to receive the appeals.

"There, the rules are very clear," he said. "You can prosecute officers and officials for crimes they have committed during the October 2000 events, and even for not investigating them properly."

Hassan Asleh, whose son Asil was killed in the riot the village of Arabeh, likened those responsible for the killing to war criminals.

"The policemen who murdered our sons will be brought to justice, just like the Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic and Nazi officers were," he told A-Shams radio.
