News in Brief

The Border Police say they arrested a 19-year-old Palestinian in Jerusalem's Old City last Monday en route to a stabbing attack. Border policemen stopped the man, who was found to be in possession of a knife and two suicide letters. The Palestinian wrote that he planned on becoming a martyr. He was transferred to the Jerusalem District Police for further questioning. (Jonathan Lis)

Qassem al-Mughrabi, the 17-year-old who injured 17 people when he used a car to commit a terrorist attack last week in Tzahal Square in Jerusalem, was buried secretly late Sunday night in the Muslim cemetery near the Old City's Lion's Gate. Like the terrorists who committed the two recent bulldozer terror attacks in the capital, Mughrabi's body was given to his family for burial only after they pledged to conduct a modest ceremony and not turn it into a nationalist event. Bahrain's foreign minister said in an interview published yesterday in the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat that Middle East nations should form a regional organization that includes Israel and Iran to try to resolve their disputes. "The organization needs to include everyone, beyond differences of religion and race. The Middle East is the cradle of monotheistic religions... They should sit together in one organization," Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said. (Yoav Stern)

The McCain campaign on Monday accused a blogger of libel on the Atlantic Monthly's Web site; a blog had appeared entitled entitled "Palin endorses Hamas." The blog mocked McCain running mate Sarah Palin's difficulty answering a question from Katie Couric, in which she gave a sweeping endorsement of democracy in the Middle East. Michael Goldfarb of the McCain campaign issued a statement saying "Governor Palin did no such thing, and your title is nothing short of slander. I doubt that you believe Hamas qualifies as 'those who seek democracy.'" (Haaretz Staff)

The Palestine Liberation Organization cannot win dismissal of a lawsuit by victims of bombings in Israel by claiming the attacks were acts of war rather than terrorism, an American judge ruled Tuesday. District Judge George Daniels said the 2004 lawsuit on behalf of victims and their families can proceed toward trial. It seeks up to $3 billion in damages from attacks between January 2001 and February 2004. (AP)
