Fatah, Hamas leaders mark start of Eid al-Fitr by vowing reconciliation

Leaders of rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas on Tuesday marked the start of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that ends the fasting month of Ramadan, by vowing to achieve reconciliation in upcoming mediation talks brokered by Egypt.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh referred to Fatah, saying, "We hope that the current round of talks in Cairo will bring an end to the rift caused by a political party that did not want to accept the nation's will."

Haniyeh also said that Fatah collaborated with the occupation against its people, but added that, while Hamas does not plan on making concessions, he still looks forward to positive developments in the talks.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas celebrated the start of Eid al-Fitr in Ramallah, by placing a wreath at a memorial for fallen Palestinian soldiers. An Abbas spokesperson said that the president and the Palestinian leadership "are making great efforts in order for the negotiations to succeed."

Hamas security forces released 35 Fatah members from prison on Sunday as a goodwill gesture and to bolster the Egyptian reconciliation efforts.
