Helen Mirren to play Mossad spy in Hollywood remake of Israeli film

Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren has signed on to star as a former Mossad agent in a Hollywood remake of the Israeli film Ha-Hov (The Debt).

In the original movie, directed by Assaf Bernstein based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Ido Rosenblum, the role was played by Israeli actress Gila Almagor.

The Hollywood version will be directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), who has said, "Helen Mirren is the perfect choice for the central role - a national celebrity and retired Mossad agent, a formidable and dignified woman grappling with years of emotional disappointment, suddenly confronted by a powerful and unexpected choice."

Miramax Films bought the rights to an English-language version a year and a half ago, and filming is expected to start next year in Israel, England and Germany. Miramax is co-producing the film with British producer Matthew Vaughn (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), who also adapted the screenplay with Jane Goldman.

Ha-Hov stars Israeli actors Almagor, Neta Garty, Yehezkel Lazarov and Itay Tiran. It tells the story of three Mossad agents who went to Berlin after World War II on a mission to capture a wanted Nazi. Their mission fails after the suspect escapes, but the agents get a second chance at nabbing him after reading a newspaper article 30 years later.
