Arab MK: Syria is serious about negotiations with Israel
By Yoav Stern
Tags: Ahmed Tibi, Syria

Syria is serious in its intention to conduct negotiations with Israel, MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) said Saturday after meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem on Thursday in New York. Tibi met with Mualem and other Arab foreign ministers when they were invited to sit together around the same table by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, for the traditional evening iftar meal that breaks the Ramadan fast.

Tibi adamantly refused to discuss details of his conversation with Mualem. However, he did say: "Syria's position is known and requires a full withdrawal from all of the Golan. Israel knows that this is the price it will have to pay."

Tibi added that if not for the political developments in Israel, he believes talks between the two countries would have continued. Meanwhile, Mualem met Friday with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Speaking in a television interview, Mualem said it was Rice who had asked for the meeting, and that the secretary of state told him that the U.S. was prepared to support Israel-Syria peace talks. Mualem added that the meeting with Rice was positive, and a basis for a continuation of the dialogue.
