Syrian FM: Peace negotiations with Israel stalled
By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem said on Saturday that the continuation of talks between his country and Israel will depend on the stance of the new Israeli government.

"The negotiations have stalled for the moment," Mouallem said in an interview with the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.

Mouallem rejected President Shimon Peres's call for Syrian President Bashar Assad to visit Jerusalem.

"This is an escape from the demands of peace," said Mouallem. "[Peres] is putting the cart before the horse. Whoever wants peace should come to the negotiation table and make peace. Only then will we be able to have direct talks."
