Paul McCartney gives Israelis a performance to remember
By Amos Harel
Tags: Paul McCartney, Israel

The elderly British gentlemen with the start of a double chin in Thursday';s paparazzi shots was gone. In his place, a great artist appeared, the last heir to the Beatles' heritage, pleased with himself and proud of his past, sometimes skipping like a kid on the stage at Yarkon Park. After a few too many songs from forgotten solo albums, Sir Paul got back to Beatles classics and to some of Wings' bigger hits.

The audience, bursting at the seams, was carried away by his magic. When Paul McCartney sat down at the piano and played "The Long and Winding Road," more than a few eyes glistened in the audience. Lots of young people were there last night, despite the high ticket prices (NIS 500 on the lawn, NIS 5,000 in the VIP stands), and there were plenty of parents with their kids in tow.

For those who could afford it, McCartney was worth every penny.

Tzipi, a mother of two and a new immigrant from Britain, had no doubt. "It's thousands of shekels, but the kids know the songs by heart. This kind of thing won't happen again."

McCartney, who got NIS 15 million for the show in Tel Aviv, ran around for more than two and a half hours, played without a break, and even said a few words in Hebrew, including "Shanah Tovah," and "Ramadan Karim" in Arabic for balance's sake.

McCartney ended with "Yesterday" and "Sergeant Pepper," and of course "The End" from "Abbey Road." Sir Paul seemed most in his element singing the theme song from the James Bond film "Live and Let Die." Fireworks lit the sky, and the giant screens showed the artist smiling happily. He said it all as he sang: "When you got a job to do you gotta do it well."
