Soccer / The mighty fall as young substitutes fail to shine
By Uri Talshir, Matan Krakow and Moshe Harush

League leaders Maccabi Netanya were drubbed by hosts Bnei Yehuda 3-0 yesterday as the Toto Cup's fourth round came to a close. Muhammed Hatari scored a brace of first-half goals to give Bnei Yehuda a secure lead, and Pedro Galvan scored from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to wrap things up. Hatari's second goal, in the 39th minute, came off a miscue by Netanya's Golan Hermon.

Netanya looked lackluster throughout the match with its second-string players display. Coach Lothar Matthaus said after the game, "The players I don't use in the league showed me they don't deserve to play and proved that I was right."

Four days ahead of their Premier League contest, Maccabi Haifa overpowered Beitar Jerusalem with a resounding 2-0 victory. While both teams relied on their young substitutes, Haifa's strikers Mohammad Ghadir and Shlomi Arbeitman came through with goals in the 59th and 89th minutes. It was definitely a moral victory for Haifa, but the lopsided win does not necessarily foreshadow Sunday's game. "We proved we have a strong team with plenty of depth," boasted Haifa coach Elisha Levy after the game. Beitar coach Reuven Atar commented he wanted to test his rotation. "I was more pleased with some than others," he said. "This had nothing to do with Sunday, when we hope to win."

Ironi Kiryat Shmona and Hapoel Tel Aviv yesterday had a chance to make up for the dull goalless game they played on Monday, and managed a bit more excitement in a 1-1 draw, although only 200 fans bothered to show up.

Still, there was no great talent on display. Both clubs went with their young reserves and gave most of their regular starting players a rest.

In the 55th minute, Peruvian midfielder Jair Cespedes drew first blood for Kiryat Shmona by receiving the ball in the center of the penalty area and slicing a low shot into the corner from 12 meters. A late mistake by goalkeeper Yossi Betzalel, however, allowed Idan Srur to salvage a draw for Hapoel. In the 89th minute, Betzalel mishandled a pass back, and instead deflected it straight toward Srur, who sent the ball flying into the net.
