Some protesters make U.S. anti-Ahmadinejad rallies into anti-Obama events

Some protesters who took part in formally non-partisan rallies against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's scheduled Tuesday speech at the United Nations were vocally critical of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama's support of dialogue with Tehran.

Addressing a Monday rally in Washington D.C. organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council, an activist of Iranian origin who said he has spent years imprisoned and tortured in an Iranian jail, declared "Shame on those who want to get to the White House to talk without pre-conditions with this regime."

"Ahmadinejad and the fascist Ayatolla'sregime is a shame for Iranian people and the international community," he said, concluding his speech "God bless America, God bless Israel, and God bless the people of Iran!"

During a larger "Stop Iran" rally in New York, the focus of a heated controversy in which Hillary Clinton cancelled her scheduled participation and organizers withdrew Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin's invitation, a small number of protesters carried anti-Obama signs.

One protester held up a sign reading "JEWS AGAINST OBAMA & AHMADINEJAD."
Another, identified by the Forward newspaper as Bill Rubin, stood apart from the crowd waving an Israeli flag and a sign that said, ?Dems hate Sarah Palin more than they hate Islamo-fascists.?
At the Washington rally, Nessie Godin, a Holocaust survivor, spoke to the crowd of Ahmadinejad's statements denying the wartime Nazi extermination of the Jews.

"When Nazis ran through the ghetto and grabbed everyone, including children, they sent them to Auschwitz. How can one say, it didn't happen? Where are those
children? Where is my father? They are in the ashes of those burned.

"How can this evil person, I don't even want to spell his name, yimach
shmo [may his name be blotted out], say it didn't happen? Let's not wait until millions are dead, let's spread the word. He must be stopped now!"

In the main, protesters held flags of the United States, Israel and Iran, and posters reading "No nukes for Iran", "Israel, we stand with you", "Iran funds global terror", "United Nations hosts terrorists."

Shahram Zamani, who said he fled Iran three years ago to US after being fired for talking to a
foreigner, told Haaretz "Ahmadinejad has to be stopped before he gets his
bomb.

"They kill Iranian people easily - do you think they will care for you, if they get it? If everyone will sit at home, nothing will change, and his intentions are clear. It is the most important thing for the next president, to prevent it".
