Man traumatized by Gaza evacuation gets lenient sentence for stabbing wife
By Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondent

The Nazareth District Court on Sunday sentenced a man to seven years in prison for stabbing his wife over suspicions she was in a relationship with another man.

Judges Hashem Khatib, Ziyad Hawari and Binyamin Arbel said they had handed down a relatively lenient sentence due to mitigating circumstances surrounding the impact of having been evacuated from his home in the 2005 Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

The man had made aliyah from eastern India in 2001 with other members of the Bnei Menashe tribe.

The judges explained their decision, citing "crises he has been through, being forced to uproot his life and to move from his home twice, causing him severe shock and possibly even a lack of stability and confidence."

However, they also wrote that the attack was premeditated rather than just the result of momentary anger, as evidenced by the fact he stabbed the victim in the chest.

"There is no doubt that the stabbing in this area [the chest] shows the intention of the accused to severely harm the victim," wrote the judges.

According to the indictment, the man - who was married to the victim for around two years - noticed her leave the house one evening and speak on her mobile phone, arousing his suspicion that she was in a relationship with another man.

Later, a dispute broke out between the two, during which the man shoved his wife before leaving the home he shared with her, their baby son and her 11-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

The man returned to the house the next day, took a knife from the kitchen and entered the bedroom where his wife was situated, stabbing her once in the chest. She fell, and called her daughter for help while begging the accused not to kill her. The daughter came into the room, took the knife from the accused, and then left to call for assistance.

The victim was sent to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery to save her life.
