Maccabi Tel Aviv notified power forward Marcus Fizer he was being released yesterday. Fizer signed a contract worth $900,000 a year two seasons ago, but in February suffered an injury to his knee. The Chicago Bulls' fourth pick in the 2000 draft, he played four seasons in the NBA, averaging 9.6 points and 4.6 rebounds before making the jump to Europe. "I expected and planned to return to Israel in the next few days," the 6'8" Louisiana native told Haaretz. "I liked being in Israel very much, and I respected the people, the fans and the club. It's a real shame it had to end like this." (Vered Cohen)

Windsurfer Shahar Zubari, who picked up Israel's only medal at this summer's Beijing Olympics, may soon have another feat to add to his resume as he leads the inaugural Royal Yachting Association-U.K. Windsurfing Association championship at Weymouth and Portland. The race site is the same one to be used at the 2012 London Olympics. The Eilat native finished yesterday's leg in fourth place, but the comfortable lead he had already accumulated kept him placed first. Zubari now has 18 negative points, six ahead of Briton Nick Dempsey in second. (Oren Kessler)

Israel's Paralympic delegation returned from Beijing yesterday after a successful run at the Games landed them six medals in all - five silvers and a bronze. Their showing far surpasses Israel's Olympic achievements this year of a single bronze medal, but pales in comparison to the 13 the delegation earned at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. On their return, several athletes remarked on their dissatisfaction with the light media coverage of the competition, as well as insufficient funding. Triple silver medal winning swimmer Imbal Pizarro chose to remain several more days in China. (Rami Hipsh)

Roy Halladay worked six innings to earn his 19th win, Scott Rolen homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Saturday to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. Toronto pulled within 7 1/2 games of Boston in the wild-card race. The Blue Jays have seven games remaining, and the Red Sox have eight. In other MLB action, the New York Yankees edged the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on a bottom of the 9th Robinson Cano single, which brought Brett Gardner in for the run. (AP)
