As tuition and rent rise, students find it harder to make ends meet

Holly plans to begin her studies in Tel Aviv University in early November. But instead of worrying about classes, exams and professors, she is anxious about making ends meet in a city and a country that are financially daunting to students.

Student expenses, not including food, school books and leisure activities, stand at roughly $1,000 in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. In the north and south of the country, the expenses are slighly lower, but employment opportunities are also fewer.

n order to pay the electricity bill, many students therefore work full time jobs on top of their studies. And when survival plays such a central role, study time inevitable becomes secondary.
