Suspect in murder of Ashkelon rebbetzin reenacts crime
By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent

Details have emerged surrounding the July murder of Ashkelon rebbetzin Ziona Samin, after a gag order on the case was lifted on Sunday and one of the suspects reenacted for the police the robbery in which the 65-year-old woman died.

The suspect, Nurian Feredian, reenacted the botched robbery at Samin's house, but denied any culpability in her death. Police sources said recently that the absence of autopsy results could complicate the investigation. Opposition to performing an autopsy has come from the victim's family and ultra-Orthodox groups, who rioted in several cities last month to protest what they see as a violation of the deceased.

On July 2, Samin's body was found bound on the floor by her husband, Rabbi Yosef Samin. Investigators from the Lachish District Police focused on suspects Feredian, 41, of Ashkelon, and Igor Kigelman, 27, of Bat Yam. Kigelman has 12 prior indictments on his rap sheet, but Feredian has no criminal record. The two suspects were detained on August 20 because both were making plans to leave Israel, the police say.

Feredian told the police he conducted the robbery at Samin's house after falling into financial straits. He said he broke into the residence when he saw the woman hanging up laundry. After entering the home, he taped her mouth shut and bound her to a chair.

Feredian said he told Samin he was only after money, but after climbing the stairs to the second floor to search for valuables, he heard noise from the floor below. When he went back downstairs, he saw that the victim was no longer breathing, he said.

The suspect told the police he only intended to rob the residence, not hurt the woman.
