Mofaz predicts he'll win Kadima primary with 43.7% of vote

Transportation Minister and Kadima Party chairmanship candidate Shaul Mofaz on Sunday predicted that he would win Wednesday's Kadima primary with 43.7 percent of the vote.

Speaking to reporters in his Jerusalem office, Mofaz added that he intends upon his victory to form a government based on the existing coalition.

"I have spoken with faction heads both within the coalition and outside of it, and there is a common understanding to establish a coalition based on the current coalition," Mofaz said.

The formation of a government after the Kadima primary will be heavily dependent on the ultra-Orthodox Shas, the fourth largest party in the Knesset.

As such, Mofaz's comments on Sunday seemingly contradicted Shas chairman Eli Yishai's assertion last week that both Mofaz and his main rival, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, had slim chances of forming a government after the Kadima leadership battle.

Yishaim also Minister of Industry and Trade said that after the primary, negotiations within the coalition will reach a dead end. He predicted that early general elections will take place in March 2009.

Nevertheless, the main condition Yishai is expected to stipulate in return for joining the next government is the return of the child stipends which had been cut earlier this year.

In reference to the demand, Mofaz said that a certain formula is acceptable to both Shas and all other coalition factions.
