Hitler wax figure back on display months after head wrenched off

A wax figure of Adolf Hitler was back on display at Madame Tussauds' new branch in Berlin on Saturday, two months after its head was wrenched off by an irate visitor.

The new controversial display is protected by a glass wall and security staff, unlike the original one which was completely open to visitors.

The museum, near the German capital's Brandenburg Gate, had pledged to portray Hitler without glorifying him, as he would have looked shortly before his 1945 suicide.

It produced a likeness of the Nazi leader hunched over a desk in a dimly lit bunker. The figure, showed Hitler - with deep lines furrowing his forehead - sitting beneath a map of Europe on the wall, monitoring the advance of allied troops from the east and west.

Madame Tussaud's defended its decision to persist with the display of the Nazi dictator despite criticism from the German media, arguing that Hitler's role in German history could not be ignored.

A 41-year-old former Berlin police officer ripped the head off the figure on July 5, a few minutes after the waxworks opened for business in Germany.

The headless Hitler waxwork worth 200,000 euros was removed for repairs.

The man, arrested but later released and placed under investigation for bodily harm and willful damage to property, said he was angry at the exhibit. He said he carried out the attack to win a bet.

An opinion poll taken in July found 62 percent of Germans favored a return of the Hitler waxwork and 35 percent were against.

The waxwork unleashed a storm of protest in Germany where public displays of Nazi memorabilia are generally banned.

Critics argued it is tasteless and inappropriate to display a replica of the man who unleashed world war and ordered the extermination of Europe's Jews in a place mainly aimed at light-hearted entertainment.
