Peres: Very small difference between Israel, PA positions on borders
By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent

President Shimon Peres said on Tuesday that the difference between Israeli and Palestinian negotiating positions on the final borders of a Palestinian state was less than five percent.

"In order not to spoil the negotiations, I will only say that the difference between the sides does not reach two figures, and does not reach half of two figures," said Peres. He made the comments in a speech at a meal held at his official residence in Jerusalem for the breaking of the Ramadan fast.

The president's comments came amid fears that ongoing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority are likely to falter after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert steps down. He plans to resign after a primary this month in his Kadima party.

Peres also said that Israel must not limit the birthrate of its Arab or Jewish citizens. "Children are not a security threat, and every family can bring as many children into the world as it desires," he noted.

The president was responding to remarks made by Sheikh Abdullah Nimr Darwish, head of the southern branch of the Islamic Movement, who charged that Israeli Arab population growth was viewed as a security threat in Israel.

Science, Culture and Sport Minister Ghaleb Majadele, who was also at the meal, decried increasing racism in Israeli society toward its Arab minority.

He stated: "This is a problem for Jews just as much as it is one for Arabs. We need to join hands and ejected it together."
