Avi Zfania's status as patient with terminal cancer is particularly cruel, because it didn't have to be that way.

Four years ago, Zfania went to a dermatologist through his HMO, Meuhedet, in order to get a small bump on his eye checked out. That growth had precancerous cells, but nobody notified Zfania.

An additional examination by the same doctor revealed Zfania had malignant melanoma, the most severe form of skin cancer. Still, he wasn't notified.

Once he finally received word of the findings, the cancer had spread.
