Livni: Kadima failed, but we'll rectify our mistakes

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the frontrunner in the race for Kadima leadership, on Monday harshly criticized her party's conduct since its inception in 2006.

"We were the nation's hope, but we failed, and we are working to rectify the situation," said Livni at a conference in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, which borders the Gaza Strip.

Livni referred to the sensitive security situation in the area and said that Israel should make progress on the release of captive Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit a condition for easing the blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Shalit was abducted by Gaza militants in June 2006, and has been held hostage since.

"Saying we`ll pay any price for Shalit only raises the price," said Livni. "The moment the Palestinians make demands beyond a mere ceasefire, our job is to make it clear to them that there are issues that are important to us too, and Gilad Shalit tops that list."

The foreign minister's comments came a day after police recommended that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert be indicted for corruption charges. Olmert has declared that he would step down from his post when Kadima names a new leader following the party primary, scheduled for next week.

Among the charges that appeared in the police recommendation issued on Sunday to indict the prime minister were bribery, breach of trust, fraud and money laundering-related crimes.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz will ultimately decide whether Olmert will in fact stand trial. Members of the prosecution believe that that a decision will be reached within a few weeks, apparently after the upcoming Jewish holidays.

Sources close to Livni said in response to the police recommendation that "we started this process with the aim of replacing the prime minister, and that will happen in a week and a half. Tzipi Livni has worked at replacing Olmert, and that will happen when she wins the primary.
