Beijing 2008 / Israeli claims silver

Israel's Inbal Pezaro yesterday earned a silver medal in the women's 100-meter freestyle on the opening day of the Beijing 2008 Paralympics. The swimmer finished with a time of 1:12.57, setting an Israeli national record.

In other action yesterday, the men's wheelchair basketball team took on the U.S. Leading by as much as 28 points, the U.S. dominated Israel 76-53 in a pool B preliminary game held at the National Indoor Stadium. Israel hit only 33 percent of its field goal attempts and 36 percent of its two-point shots, and 13 turnovers proved costly. Israeli forward Dotan Meishar led the game with 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Back in Israel, windsurfer Shahar Zubari will receive Wednesday for his accomplishment in Beijing. In a ceremony that Zhao Jun, the Chinese ambassador to Israel, will host, Zubari will receive NIS 172,000 - NIS 160,000 for finishing in third place and the remainder for finishing in the top five in Beijing. Zubari also landed his first advertising contract yesterday, when he was hired to be a spokesperon for Renault. He will earn $65,000 and receive a car.
