Three women killed in separate road accidents Sunday

One woman was killed and five people injured when a truck collided with a private vehicle on the Arava road, 60km north of Eilat. The injured, one in serious condition and the other four in moderate condition, were taken by helicopter to Be'er Sheva's Soroka Hospital. Twin brothers were among the injured.

Also Sunday, one woman was killed and two injured lightly in a hit and run in the Ketziot area in the country's south.

The driver, who is believed to have overtaken another vehicle before colliding with an oncoming car, fled the scene of the incident.

Security officials originally believed the incident to be terrorist-related, but after it became clear it was a traffic accident the police began their search for the driver. Roadblocks were set up in the area and a helicopter was also sent in an attempt to locate the driver.

The police have opened inquiries into both the accidents.

Earlier Sunday a female pedestrian died from injuries suffered when she was struck by a vehicle in Ashdod.

In Petah Tikva a woman was injured seriously after being struck by a bus. She was taken to Beilinson Hospital.

Suspect's remand extended

Nazareth Magistrate's Court approved Sunday the 24-hour extension of the remand of the man suspected of causing a deadly car crash the previous day.

The 55-year-old truck driver, of Kama village in the Lower Galilee, was arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of causing a car crash that left a husband and wife dead.

Simhoni and Esther Yehuda were killed on Saturday when their car flipped over in the Beit She'an Valley. Their daughter Nofar, 26, who was driving the car, reportedly lost control after driving onto an oil spot on the road.

Police believe the oil leaked from the suspect's truck as he was fixing a flat tire, and he was detained following eyewitness reports.

The accident occurred at around 6 A.M., as the Yehuda family was traveling to visit their son Maor, 18, a Border Police officer serving at the Hawara checkpoint south of the West Bank city of Nablus.

On the way home, the vehicle overturned on Route 90, between Moshav Yardena, where the family lived, and nearby Hamadiya.

Police said the car drove over the oil stain, slid, and struck a vehicle driving in the opposite lane. The father and mother were seriously injured, the daughter lightly hurt.

The Peretz family of Moshav Nehemia was in the oncoming car. In this case, too, the parents were seriously injured and the girls lightly.

The Peretz couple, meanwhile, were airlifted to Haifa's Rambam Medical Center while their daughters - Gal, 12, and Ori, 4 - were taken to Haemek. Dr. Majed Zabidat of the children's surgery department said Gal is in good condition while Ori suffered a light head wound.

The Yehuda family arrived in Israel from northern Iraq in 1951 and were among the founders of Moshav Yardena. Simhoni Yehuda served in the Border Police in the Mount Gilboa community of Gan-Ner, while Esther worked in the guesthouses of Kibbutz Sha'ar Hagolan.

Simhoni's brother, Tzach, said their brother Tzion was killed in the battle over the Suez Canal in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and months passed before his body was finally discovered. "Now I have to tell my 98-year-old mother that Simhoni was also killed," he said.
