Police crack 2007 mystery murder of leading physician
By Roni Singer-Heruti

The investigation into the 2007 murder of a hospital physician has taken a major step forward, police revealed yesterday, with the arrest of the first suspect in the case.

Prof. David Niv, the head of a clinic at a Tel Aviv hospital, was found shot dead in his BMW in Ramat Gan on February 5, 2007. Niv had been on his way from the hospital to his home in Savyon.

The assailant pulled up in the lane beside Niv on Aluf Sadeh Street, shooting him at close range.

Traffic police and paramedics found Niv dead in the driver's seat with bullet wounds in his upper body; they also found bullet holes in the side panel of the vehicle.

Police sources estimate that other arrests are likely to be made in connection to the case in the coming weeks or months.

The suspect, Salim al-Baz, 36, of Kafr Qassem, is known to police as having a history of auto theft. A gag order remains in place on the case, preventing the release of further details.

The initial investigation pointed to a possible case of mistaken identity, but investigators soon came to believe the murder had been premeditated.

Yesterday, Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court sentenced al-Baz to 15 days in police custody. Giora Zilberstein, the man's attorney, said he is innocent of all charges, and was detained after serving 15 months for auto theft.

In Savyon, residents expressed hope that the investigation would progress swiftly, and that the questions surrounding Niv's murder would be answered.
