Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. (Daniel Bar-On / Jini)
Kadima sources: Olmert undermining successor to stay in power for longer
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent

Senior figures in Kadima claim that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert would like to prevent the establishment of an alternative cabinet that would push for early elections, as this would allow him to stay in power for many more months.

The same sources say that in his recent initiatives, like the scheduled discussion early next week for an evacuation-compensation bill for settlers in the West Bank, Olmert is trying to stir discord in the coalition, thus undermining his successor's chances of putting together a new government.

On Sunday Olmert will raise before the cabinet the proposal of Vice Premier Haim Ramon for evacuating settlers from the West Bank. Both leading candidates in the Kadima primary, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni are opposed to the proposal.

According to senior figures in the party, because Kadima will hold a primary for the party's leadership in less than two weeks, it would be more appropriate for Olmert to "remain silent" and not stir discord. They also described the backing Olmert gave Finance Minister Roni Bar-On in passing the 2009 budget in the cabinet two weeks ago - notwithstanding opposition from Labor and Shas ministers - as a destabilizing act.

On Thursday, Mofaz told his supporters at a campaign rally that "the bill [evacuation-compensation] weakens Israel's position in any future negotiations, and I will not support it."

Shas chairman Eli Yishai said Thursday that "this is a move that lacks legitimacy. The people of Israel have still not healed from the painful wounds of the expulsion from the Gaza Strip and someone is preparing in an illegitimate fashion another expulsion."
