VIDEO / This Ramadan, Arab TV seeks big ratings from captive audience
By Channel 10 and Haaretz Staff

Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for September 4, 2008.

Throughout the Muslim world, special TV programs will be airing this week, just in time for Ramadan. With families up late breaking the fast after sunset each night of the month-long holiday, TV producers are banking on a captive audience that will ensure large ratings for their new programs.

The biggest hit of this year's Ramadan, is the Syrian Soap Opera "Bab el-Hara" or neighborhood gate. The program focuses on a Syrian neighborhood during the time of the French occupation between the two world wars, and offers a nostalgic look at life in the Arab world. The series also depicts the rise of Arab nationalism, an issue that for many in the Arab world, is still relevant today.

Other popular programs include a biography of former Egyptian president and staunch enemy of Israel, Gamal Abdel Nasser and a Palestinian show about nothing that draws inspiration from Seinfeld.

For a population at times fatigued from Jihad, poverty, and the political intrigue of the Modern Middle East, these programs offer a much-appreciated escape.
