State seeks 20 years for drunk driver who killed six
By Tomer Zarchin

The state prosecution asked the Tel Aviv District Court yesterday to give the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison to a driver who caused a car crash that killed six people while he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Yaron Bracha, who was found guilty of manslaughter last May for his part in the accident just outside Lod, told the court he would devote his life to lecturing against irresponsible driving.

"Yaron Bracha is a message," he said. "I want to go to schools and hospitals and hold lectures there. I also said 'it won't happen to me,' but life betrayed me. I also underwent a trauma."

Ron Ben Gigi, the 12-year-old daughter of one of the people killed in the crash, yesterday rebuked Bracha from the witness stand. "What were you thinking when you ran a red light?" she cried. "Did you think my dad would survive? Were you not taught about the sanctity of life?"

The accident occurred in March 2007 at a junction outside Lod.

According to the indictment, Bracha was driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine when he ran a red light at 171 kilometers an hour, 80 kilometers above the speed limit, and crashed into a vehicle carrying five Egged bus company employees.

All five were killed, together with Bracha's twin brother, who was sitting beside him.
