Needing vaccinations, dozens of African refugee kids barred from North TA schools By Igal Hai Some 40 children from African refugee families have been barred from four north Tel Aviv elementary schools due to a last-minute demand that they receive vaccinations and undergo medical exams. The children were registered and assigned classes two months ago, but it wasn't until Sunday that the Tel Aviv municipality instructed the children's parents not to send them to school, which began Monday. Advertisement The parents were told to send the children to a health clinic in central Tel Aviv to receive routine vaccinations that all public-school children must have, as well as a meningitis vaccine. Once the children were vaccinated, they were asked to undergo additional exams, including lung X-rays. The percentage of African refugees with active tuberculosis has doubled to 28 percent of all TB patients in Israel this year, according to the custody tribunal for illegal migrants. However, although the municipality said the requirement was made by the Health Ministry, the ministry denied issuing such an order. It was not immediately clear when the children would be allowed to attend school, because the municipality said the vaccinations and testing were still underway. As of today they will be sent to a community center, where they will study Hebrew, take part in activities and receive meals. Reli Katsav, an activist for Israeli refugee advocacy organization Assaf, said the refugees were being treated differently from the other students, who are vaccinated during the year: "I know refugee children from Tel Aviv who were waiting since April to start school.
