Mother of IDF soldier abducted by Hezbollah to run in Nahariya elections
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

The mother of Israel Defense Forces soldier Udi Goldwasser, whose body was recently returned by Hezbollah after his abduction at the start of the Second Lebanon War, says she will take part in the Nahariya municipal elections.

Miki Goldwasser will seek a spot on the municipal council as part of Mayor Jackie Sabag's party One Nahariya.

"I was born in Nahariya and this is where my children were born," she said Tuesday. "I consider it my duty to take part in public life for the benefit of the city and its residents."

She said taking part in municipal politics would be a way of giving back to the people who dedicated themselves to bringing home her son, whose fate was kept hidden by Hezbollah for around two years.

"I think that now it's my turn to give back," she said. "I need to learn the municipal system and act with the people of Nahariya to form a plan that will allow for the city's continued prosperity."

Mayor Sabag said he was pleased that "people like Miki Goldwasser, who care about the city, are joining politics."

Goldwasser and her husband Shlomo have two other sons, Yair, 29, and Gadi, 25.
