Mother suspected of drowning 4-year-old-son 'had depression for the past year'

The brother of Regina Kruchkov, accused of drowning her four-year-old son Tuesday night, said that she had suffered from depression since separating from her previous companion, who is also the child's father, one year ago.

A Tel Aviv court on Wednesday extended by nine days the accused's remand.

Tel Aviv welfare agencies on Wednesday said that they are familiar with Kruchkov, the mother who allegedly drowned her son Michael.

Earlier in the day, the court ordered the release of the woman's father and brother, who were arrested for alleged involvement in the murder.

"The police first arrest and then investigate," the judge wrote, ruling that the evidence presented was insufficient to suggest they were accomplices to the murder.

"I'm shocked by this incident," Kruchkov's brother, Vitali, said. "There were no signs [this was coming]. The child was mischievous, energetic, happy, and he loved to play."

The 31-year-old woman had requested financial aid for her son's daycare two years ago. Yehiel Mahdoun, head of the municipality's social services in south Tel Aviv, said a committee disqualified Kruchkov from receiving state funding, after finding her to be a competent parent capable of providing for her son. The committee did, however, provide some assistance as Kruchkov is a working single mother.

The four-year-old boy was found dead in a Tel Aviv apartment Tuesday evening; police were called to the scene by the boy's mother, whom the police suspect drowned her son.

Around 10:30 P.M. police and rescue services arrived at the apartment on Hezkiyahu Street in south Tel Aviv's Shapira quarter. They found the child dead. The mother was arrested and taken into custody.

Mahdoun said that reports from the daycare over the past two years indicate the mother and son's relationship to be entirely positive.

They describe a warm connection between the two, and indicated the boy was always clean and well-dressed and got along well with his caretakers and other children. The reports also show that the mother sometimes had difficulty parting from her son and hugged him often.

Mahdoun said that Michael suffered from a speech impediment for which he was going to therapy once a week. He also said that the boy was in contact with his father through the daycare center, but that their relationship had lessened recently.

The news marks the third suspected murder of a child by family members in recent weeks. Last Friday, Olga Borisov was arrested on suspicion of drowning her 4-year-old son, Alon, off a Bat Yam beach.

The Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court on Sunday banned Olga Borisov of Rishon Letzion from attending the funeral, citing fears that the boy's father might try to harm her.

Police arrested Borisov, 42, late on Thursday at Bat Yam's Taio beach. She has been described as suffering from mental-health problems.

Earlier last week a report was released on the missing 4-year-old girl Rose Pizem, whose grandfather, Ronny Ron, is suspected of murdering her and throwing her body in the Yarkon River in a suitcase.

Ron is suspected of deliberately concealing the location of where he disposed of her body, say the police, for fear the corpse would disprove his claim that he killed the girl accidentally.
