Reputed mob boss Abergil won't be charged over Bat Yam shooting

Reputed crime boss Itzik Abergil will not be charged in the death of Margarita Lautin, the innocent bystander killed in front of her family on a Bat Yam beach on July 28.

The Israel Police's Serious and International Crimes Unit is convinced it has evidence of Abergil's involvement in the murder, but prosecutor's doubt the evidence is insufficient for a conviction.

Abergil was released from custody last week in connection to the case, but was detained again immediately for other alleged crimes outlined by American law enforcement officials.

Abergil and his brother Meir are suspected of involvement in serious crimes in the U.S., including murder and money laundering.

The international crimes unit had been tracking Abergil and his brother for three years. Investigators believed this time they had found evidence to link him definitively to the Lautin murder. Haaretz has learned that prior to the shooting, Abergil met several times with reputed criminal Motti Hassin and these meetings, police say, yielded solid evidence of Abergil's connection to plans to kill rival mobster Rami Amira.

Detectives were on the beach at the time of Lautin's shooting, apparently monitoring Abergil himself, who was at a nearby restaurant only an hour before.

Abergil was taped meeting with Hassin the day before, and a week earlier.

Amira arrived at the location of the shooting shortly after Abergil left. A little later, the two alleged assassins arrived, Roni Ben Adi and Shimon Sabah. The two assailants allegedly opened fire at Amira, who fled the scene, and Lautin was killed in the cross fire.

Motti Hassin has also been interrogated several times in connection with the killing, but has not been detained.

Authorities at the State Prosecutor's Office were reportedly unconvinced by the evidence against Abergil, leading to a rift between their office and the international crimes unit.

The two suspects in Lautin's murder will be read their indictments for murder next week.
