Grandfather insists Rose Pizem's body is in Yarkon river

Ronny Ron, who is suspected of murdering his granddaughter-stepdaughter, Rose Pizem, is deliberately concealing the location of where he disposed of her body, say the police, for fear the corpse would disprove his claim that he killed the 4-year-old accidentally.

Police suspect that Rose was, in fact, murdered so brutally that even now, more than three months later, the body would still bear witness to it if found.

"He's not a very clever chap, but he also understands that without a body, it's harder," a police source said.

"It's true that he confessed to the murder, but that still doesn't mean he's interested in telling us where the body is."

Police are exerting heavy pressure on Ron to answer that question. As part of their pressure tactics, they have been urging him repeatedly to enable Rose's mother - who is both Ron's daughter-in-law and his live-in lover - to visit her child's grave and thereby mourn her properly.

However, Ron continues to insist that he stuffed the body into a suitcase and threw it into the Yarkon River at a particular spot in Tel Aviv, where police divers have thus far failed to find any trace of it.

Meanwhile, policemen and volunteers expanded the search Sunday for Rose's body into other locales.

Sunday, the search focused on the Sharon region, in the area bounded by Kibbutz Shefayam, Netanya, the Coastal Highway and the Mediterranean Sea.

Police are also conducting extensive searches of Ahimeir and Baruch Ram Streets in Netanya, where Ron and his mother Vivien, respectively, live, as well as of Netanya's beaches.

Daily searches of the Yarkon River have continued as well. Sunday, however, the search was called off almost immediately after the first divers went down, because dead fish were spotted floating on the water.

The dives resumed only after Environmental Protection Ministry inspectors were summoned and determined that the water did not pose a hazard to the divers.

Also Sunday, Ron and his family moved out of their Netanya apartment, because their lease was up.

During the move, a few items belonging to Rose were discovered, including a letter to her from her mother, Marie-Charlotte Renault, written while Rose was still living with her father in France.

"You've gone through many changes recently," the letter said. "A new house, a new daycare center, and that's a lot for a young girl. I'm here, even if I'm in another country. I think of you a lot and love you very, very much."
