News in Brief

Syria's military establishment does not know where the body of Mossad agent Eli Cohen is buried, a former senior Syrian official said in a report broadcast yesterday on the news network Al-Arabiya. Mundar Musali, a former presidential chief of staff, said President Bashar Assad had asked his military to locate the grave of Cohen, who was executed in Damascus in 1965. Syrian officials told the reporters that Cohen's bones had been removed from his grave three times to prevent Israeli commandos from recovering them, but said their final resting place is unknown. Sources close to the search for Rose Pizem said yesterday that police have not yet decided whether to temporarily dry out a 200-meter stretch of the Yarkon River as part of the search. "The chances of finding her by drying out the Yarkon are slim," an officer said. Diving was suspended over the weekend and the search focused on the area near the river's banks, as well as the Netanya beach. A helicopter, mounted officers and a naval police force assisted. Indictments are expected soon against two Israeli Arabs from Shfaram who were arrested last week on suspicion of planning to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets. On Friday, Anis Safouri, 20, and Hussam Khalil, were ordered to remain in custody for five more days. The prosecution believes the two belonged to Islamic Jihad in Ramallah and planned to carry out attacks against Israeli pilots and an Israel Defense Forces checkpoint. (Jack Khoury)

One person was killed and six others were injured in a traffic accident near the Jabara checkpoint in the West Bank. Police believe the accident was caused by a driver who passed the car in front of him and collided head-on with a van in the opposite lane. A second car also collided with the van. A passenger in the first car was killed, the driver was seriously injured and five other passengers sustained injuries. (Jonathan Lis)

A 12-year-old Jaffa boy drowned on Friday at Alma Beach in Tel Aviv; he was pulled out of the water by a surfer at about noon. Paramedics were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate the boy. Tel Aviv police said the boy's parents reported him missing on Thursday. Witnesses saw him enter the water on Friday morning but did not see him return to shore. (Igal Hai)

Labor Party chairman and Defense Minister Ehud Barak recently began searching for someone to head up his campaign to attract Russian-speaking voters. Last week Barak gave four interviews to local Russian-language news outlets, which focused mainly on security and military affairs as well as his decline in public opinion polls. (Mazal Mualem)
