ABCs of movers
By Barr Hayoun
Tags: Israel

Moving can be costly, which is precisely the sort of thing that attracts vultures. You don't want a charlatan moving your precious collection of china Elvis statues. Here are some tips.

1. You can survey the market and compare companies using sites such as jobi.co.il, midrag.co.il, and noproblem.co.il, which present customer reviews.

2. If you can't obtain a personal recommendation from a friend about a moving company, ask the company for referrals from happy clients.

3. A company that sends a representative to your house to view its contents before moving is doing the job properly.

4. Try to avoid moving in the summer or before the holidays, when prices are higher.

5. The more you clarify your needs to the company, the more you avoid price hikes on the day of the move. Describe how many things you're moving, the new and the old apartments, whether there are elevators, the distance from the truck's parking space to the apartments, and so on.

6. If the movers are late or don't show up at all, there's little you can do - unless you signed an agreement stipulating compensation.

7. Make sure that insurance is discussed for your items, including the breakables. After unloading, make sure all your things arrived intact.

8. Try to move early in the morning. You'll get a fresh team.

9. Find out what the moving company is supplying: boxes, containers, plastic sheeting, glue, and whether they have special accessories.

10. If you have a thin-screen TV that has to remain standing while moving, try to move it in its original container. Under no circumstances can such screens be moved lying down flat. And don't stick it below your car seat. Have a home cinema? There are companies that specialize in moving them.
