Ex-Shin Bet man suspected of selling stolen gas to Gazans

A former Shin Bet security service official is suspected of selling stolen gas tanks to Palestinians in Gaza, violating, among other things, an Israeli embargo against the coastal strip.

Inspectors from the National Infrastructure Ministry safety and supervision department on Wednesday raided a warehouse in Ashkelon's southern industrial area, which was owned by the former Shin Bet official.

At the site, the inspectors found over 1700 stolen tanks of gas totaling some 100 tons, which the Shin Bet man is suspected of having bought from Israeli Arabs in the North with the intention of transferring them to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Investigators are also looking into suspicions that gas tanks have already transferred to the Gaza Strip. Supervisors found an additional 200 gas tanks on Thursday morning in the possession of the Israeli Arabs suspected of involvement in the affair. The suspects were allegedly attempting to move the tanks to a different hiding place.

The raid came after the National Infrastructure Ministry safety and supervision department on Wednesday received information about an unauthorized gas warehouse in the southern industrial area of Ashkelon.

During the subsequent raid, department supervisors inspected the site for several hours. The supervisors found a storeroom there that had been broken into. They said that anyone could access the storeroom, in which the stolen gas tanks were located, as it had been left completely unguarded.

Most of the tanks had previously belonged to the four largest gas companies in the country. The gas companies were informed that the stolen gas tanks had been found and were summoned to retrieve the dangerous stockpile.

The National Infrastructure Ministry has transferred the investigation's findings to the police. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the suspects involved
