Israel's 'Love Bay' reality show halted due to building violations

The Haifa Magistrate's Court has halted filming of the reality show Mifratz Ha'ahava (The Love Bay), which is being shot on the beach at Palmahim. The structures erected there for the show were built illegally and violated planning and zoning laws, said the court.

Mifratz Hahava is a new reality show for Channel 2 franchisee Reshet, where young singles compete in various tasks with the goal of finding a partner. The contestant left without a partner at the end of each episode will be tossed off the show, and replaced by a new contestant. Those who survive until the end of the show will win monetary prizes.

The state had petitioned the court to stop the filming, claiming that the producers built on the beach without permits and committed other offenses, including using land zoned for tourism and recreation without proper approval. The state also emphasized the importance of acting urgently, particularly since the television show would receive huge public exposure and broadcast images of the violations to every Israeli household, sending a dangerous message to the public that planning and zoning laws are not compulsory.

Judge Zaid Falah accepted the state's arguments and ordered Reshet and the show's producers not to use the buildings or other alterations it had made to the landscape, and to stop filming until a hearing scheduled for next Sunday. This is a serious blow for Reshet, which is working feverishly to finish filming and editing the program, which is supposed to premiere next week. In fact, Reshet has high hopes for the show and has scheduled it for twice a week. Each episode costs about $150,000 to $200,000 to produce, but besides the financial losses, Reshet will also have to find a quick solution for its schedule problems if the show cannot air on time.
