Two Sderot schools illegally give students admission tests
By Mijal Grinberg

Sderot is permitting admission tests for two elementary schools that focus on science studies, in violation of Education Ministry regulations.

Ordinary schools are not allowed to screen potential students, unless they have received special permission. Ministry officials confirmed that the municipality is allowing admission tests at Mada'im Torani and Mada'im Alon, neither of which received authorization.

Sderot education department director Miriam Sassi told one irate parent this week that a decision was made to use assessment tests, which are conducted by the Erez Institute for a fee.

A City Hall spokesman, Yossi Pinhas Cohen, said in response: "The mayor and education department had a meeting with Education Ministry officials, including the district director Amira Haim and Minister Yuli Tamir. The municipality explained the need to screen children for science schools. The municipality held the tests with the hope that the Education Ministry would adopt the proposal. Education department director Miriam Sassi instructed the Erez Institute, which conducts the tests, not to release the results yet until the authorization arrives."

As a result, some parents took the precaution of registering their children for two schools, and still do not know which they will be attending.

The two science schools have been administering admission tests for several years, in tandem with the municipality's efforts to obtain the permit that would render them legal. The municipality's application is still under discussion, and the Education Ministry recently ordered Sderot not to hold admission tests.

A ministry comment was blunt: "The ministry insists that students not be subjected to admission tests. The Sderot municipality was officially notified of this and acted in violation of the regulations."
