Following 'warm return' policy, IDF sends African refugees back to Egypt
By Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: israel, refugees, egypt

The Israel Defense Forces has in recent days returned to Egypt African refugees who tried to infiltrate into Israel, after being instructed to do so by the government in accordance with the policy called "warm return."

IDF soldiers stationed along the border with Egypt informed Haaretz on Tuesday of the refugees' deportation.

An army spokesman confirmed the report and said that "the IDF returned illegal infiltrators in recent days following instruction in recent months from the political echelon to do so, and following bilateral agreements between Israel and Egypt. The return was made possible by Egypt's willingness to absorb the infiltrators."

Human rights organizations said in response that the IDF's actions came in opposition to what the state had told the High Court of Justice.

The rights groups added the deportations violated one of the main principles of the United Nations' refugee policy, which states that refugees cannot be expelled to a country that will likely persecute them. Israel is a signatory of the UN agreement.
